It is the golden chalice hormone when it comes to carving out a great physique.<\/p>\n<p>Watching your favorite sports team can be exciting, annoying, frustrating and elating all in equal measures &#8211; but can it affect your testosterone levels?<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s an interesting question, and in this article, you&#8217;ll learn all about if\u00a0being an observer may be just as effective as being a player. This is what we&#8217;re covering:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The link between T\u00a0and sports<\/li>\n<li>The science &#8211; does watching it\u00a0increase T levels?<\/li>\n<li>Summary<\/li>\n<li>What else increases T levels?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>The link between testosterone levels and watching sport<\/h2>\n<p>When athletes play they often find that T levels increase prior to, during and after the game. For example, a study by Booth\u00a0et al [1] measured\u00a0both T levels in\u00a06\u00a0university-level tennis players across 6\u00a0matches during a\u00a0competitive\u00a0season.<\/p>\n<p>They found that <strong>T\u00a0increased\u00a0just before a game, and afterwards rose for winners relative to losers.\u00a0<\/strong>Additionally, winners with increasing\u00a0T\u00a0had higher levels\u00a0prior to\u00a0their next match, in contrast to losers with falling T, who had lower levels\u00a0before their next match.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Okay. But do the fans have similar hormonal changes?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>This area of research was first proposed by a Professor of sociology in New York called\u00a0Dr. Theodore Kemper [2] who was interested in the effects of &#8216;<em><strong>vicarious<\/strong><\/em>&#8216; hormonal changes when watching a game.<\/p>\n<p><strong>He proposed that by watching your team play competitive sport, you may get similar increases in T levels as those who are taking part.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Being part of a team is an important aspect of life for many men &#8211; we like to share in the glory of winning, but also\u00a0take losses personally &#8211; it can have a big effect on our mood.\u00a0We like to discuss our team with our friends, but also poke fun at friends if their team lose &#8211; particularly if they are local rivals.<\/p>\n<p>We also like to feel part of the team too &#8211; we refer to our local team as &#8216;we&#8217; and &#8216;our&#8217; as opposed to &#8216;them&#8217;. There is a certain amount of union and community\u00a0between us and <em>our\u00a0<\/em>favorite team &#8211; we even build affiliations with individual players.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8230;and the role of testosterone?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As an\u00a0androgen &#8211; a group of steroid hormones secreted by the testes &#8211; <strong>T\u00a0is associated with dominant behavior, especially aggression and high social <\/strong><b>dominance\u00a0<\/b>[3] &#8211; all traits seen in the fandom of supporting your team.<\/p>\n<p>It would make sense that there will be some hormonal response based around whether we win or lose.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>let&#8217;s have a look at what the science says:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1200 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Watching-Sport-and-Testosterone.jpg\" alt=\"Watching-Sport-and-Testosterone\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Watching-Sport-and-Testosterone.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Watching-Sport-and-Testosterone-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Watching-Sport-and-Testosterone-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Watching-Sport-and-Testosterone-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div class=\"group infobox infobox-blue mtop20 mbottom20\">\n<p><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Key Point:<\/strong><\/span><\/em> Many men see being a fan of their team as a community experience &#8211;\u00a0this builds\u00a0affiliations with individual players, the team identity and other fans.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>The science &#8211; does watching sport increase testosterone?<\/h2>\n<p>There are a few interesting studies on the link between T-levels and watching the game\u00a0&#8211; and also how the\u00a0result of the game might affect it too. Here are the best of those studies:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>#Study 1:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0Van der Meij<b>\u00a0<\/b>[4]<\/p>\n<p>This study was conducted during the\u00a02010 FIFA World Cup Soccer, and analysed the T responses of 50 Spanish fans in their game against the Netherlands. Fans\u00a0watched the match with friends or family in a public place or at home.<\/p>\n<p>Results showed\u00a0that <strong>T\u00a0levels were higher when watching the match than on a control day<\/strong> &#8211; there was an obvious change in biochemistry that started just with the anticipation of competition.<\/p>\n<p>Unsurprisingly, there was also an increase in <em><strong>cortisol<\/strong><\/em>&#8211; the body&#8217;s stress hormone &#8211; as well. Interestingly, cortisol levels were higher in those that said they were a stronger fan of soccer. Presumable because the result &#8216;meant more&#8217; to them.<\/p>\n<p>The study concluded that\u00a0<strong>hormone\u00a0levels of watchers increased to prepare their organism to defend or enhance their social status.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>#Study 2:<\/strong><\/span><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Bernhardt [5]<\/p>\n<p>In a similar study published in the journal\u00a0<em>Physiology and behavior, <\/em>Bernhardt and colleagues set up two different experiments:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Experiment\u00a01:\u00a0<\/strong>8\u00a0male fans <strong>attending<\/strong> a basketball game between traditional college rivals<\/li>\n<li><strong>Experiment 2:\u00a0<\/strong>21 soccer\u00a0fans\u00a0<strong>watching<\/strong> a televised World Cup soccer game\u00a0between traditional international rivals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In both experiments, volunteers had their T levels measured prior to the game. Results showed that in\u00a0both studies, by watching sport,\u00a0<strong>mean testosterone level increased in the fans of winning teams by around 20% and decreased by the same amount in the fans of losing teams<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, the increases in T levels were not anticipatory, and instead were quite sudden &#8211; mostly as the game was so close until the end.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>&#8220;Basking in reflected glory, in which individuals increase their self-esteem by identifying with successful others, is usually regarded as a cognitive process that can affect behavior.
