We&#8217;ll be covering:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The health consequences of poor quality food<\/li>\n<li>Does it lower testosterone?<\/li>\n<li>Summary<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>The health consequences of junk food<\/h2>\n<p><em><strong>The fast-food industry generates $5.1 billion in sales per year, and accounts for nearly 4.7% annual Gross Domestic Product\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>[1].<\/p>\n<p>For the purpose of this article, junk food refers to any food that is high in calories, contains unhealthy amounts or types of fats, sugar and salt, and is low in valuable nutrients like complex carbohydrates, protein, vitamins and minerals.<\/p>\n<p>Whilst it may be convenient and relatively affordable, for years, people\u00a0have advised about the relationship between an unhealthy diet and health risks for conditions such as diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease and certain types of cancer.<\/p>\n<p>The link between poor quality\u00a0food consumption and obesity is well known and evidence suggests that in urban areas, places with more fast food outlets have higher obesity rates. These correlate strongly to North America&#8217;s leading cause of death &#8211; cardiovascular\u00a0disease [1].<\/p>\n<p>As well, obesity is a risk factor for a number of metabolic illnesses, and it isn&#8217;t surprising that\u00a0<strong>those with frequent visits to fast-food restaurants &#8211;\u00a0more than twice a week, gain an extra 4\u00b75 kg of body weight and have a two-fold greater increase in insulin resistance\u00a0<\/strong>[2].<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>There are real health risks when it comes to fast food intake. But does it affect testosterone levels as well? When levels are optimal it plays an important role in development of male traits such as hair growth, voice deepening and testicular growth from\u00a0adolescence onwards. It also plays an important role in the development of muscle and bone mass, libido and sexual function as well.<\/p>\n<p>Our T levels peak during puberty and after the age of around 30 years our levels drop by about 1% per year. <strong>Normal levels for a male are 300-1000ng\/dL<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Clinical <em><strong>hypogonadism<\/strong><\/em>, or\u00a0&#8216;low T&#8217; occurs at levels below 300ng\/dL and <strong>as many as\u00a014 million men (38.7%) of US men are thought to have clinically low T\u00a0levels<\/strong>\u00a0[3].<\/p>\n<p>Men with less healthy diets have been found to have significantly lower T levels in a large joint study based at the Universities of Kentucky and North Texas [4].<\/p>\n<p>147 men were interviewed about their\u00a0lifestyle factors such as smoking, diet, and exercise, and then these outcomes were assessed against their T levels.<\/p>\n<p>The study found that not only did\u00a0testosterone levels decrease with age, they also plummeted in\u00a0those who had poor diets.\u00a0The study implicated that <strong>diet &#8211; a modifiable risk factor, in addition to advanced age is\u00a0a risk factor in the development of reduced T\u00a0levels.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Additionally, a large study published recently has found that those who eat junk food have much higher levels of\u00a0exposure to hormone-disrupting chemicals called <strong>phthalates<\/strong> such as<em><strong> DHEP and DiNP\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; <\/em>man made compounds that make plastics flexible.<\/p>\n<p>The study, involving over 8500 children and adults, found\u00a0a <strong>dose-response relationship between fast food intake and exposure to phthalates<\/strong>\u00a0[5].<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Those that reported\u00a0a diet of\u00a0~30% or more of their daily food intake from convenience\u00a0food had\u00a023% higher levels of DiNP and 39% higher levels of DEHP in their blood.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s bad enough in itself &#8211; phthalates have been linked to a number of illnesses &#8211; but these\u00a0compounds have also been found to lower T levels too.<\/p>\n<p>A study\u00a0by the\u00a0US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2011-2012 [6] found that <strong>as exposure to\u00a0phthalates from food and care products increases,\u00a0testosterone\u00a0levels decrease &#8211; by up to a staggering 29%.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1386 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Fast-Food-and-Obesity.jpg\" alt=\"Fast-Food-and-Obesity\" width=\"800\" height=\"451\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Fast-Food-and-Obesity.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Fast-Food-and-Obesity-150x85.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Fast-Food-and-Obesity-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Fast-Food-and-Obesity-768x433.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Summary &#8211; the effect of fast food on T levels<\/h2>\n<p>The fast food industry generates\u00a0$5.1 billion in sales per year, and accounts for nearly 4.7% annual Gross Domestic Product.
