On the face of things it seems like a harmless occasional cheat food.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>But can it affect your testosterone\u00a0levels?\u00a0In this article we&#8217;ll take a look at the effects of this dark, sweet treat\u00a0on your male hormones and answer the following questions:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is licorice?<\/li>\n<li>Does it affect testosterone and cortisol?<\/li>\n<li>Are there any side effects?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>What is licorice?<\/h2>\n<p>Licorice comes from the root of the wild <em><strong>glycyrrhiza glabra<\/strong><\/em><i><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/i>plant and is native to Asia and southern Europe. It has been used for its supposed medicinal qualities in ancient China, and has been part of herbal medicine\u00a0since the former Han era &#8211; 2nd &#8211; 3rd century B.C. [1].<\/p>\n<p>The main bioactive compound of the root is\u00a0<strong>glycyrrhizin<\/strong>, a compound that is extremely sweet. The name has the literal meaning <em><strong>&#8216;sweet root&#8217;<\/strong><\/em> and as such is used to sweeten and flavor products such as\u00a0candy and breath fresheners, herbal teas, cough mixtures and soft drinks. <strong>It is 50 times sweeter than sucrose<\/strong> &#8211; cane sugar [2].<\/p>\n<p>Glycyrrhizin is a <em><strong>saponin<\/strong> <\/em>&#8211; a type of steroidal compound found in plants. It accounts for between 2 and 25% of the total root depending on the species. It is used to flavor candy, soft drinks and herbal teas, as well as some medicinal products.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>The licorice and testosterone relationship<\/h2>\n<p>As a regularly researched plant, there are quite a few studies that have analyzed its\u00a0effects on testosterone. Here is a breakdown of the most relevant ones.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>#Study 1:<\/strong><\/span> Sakamoto et al [3]<\/p>\n<p>This was the first study linking the effects of the sweet root with the male hormone testosterone. It was an <em>in-vitro<\/em>\u00a0study meaning that it was done using a test tube under lab conditions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The results found that by eating the sweet root plant,\u00a0T levels decreased by ~40%,\u00a0<\/strong>meaning that it had a strong inhibitory effect. Interestingly,\u00a0<strong>the inhibitory effect depended on the concentration of glycyrrhetinic acid<\/strong> &#8211; the more there was, the lower T levels became.<\/p>\n<p>The authors of the study concluded that\u00a0glycyrrhetinic acid interfered with <em><strong>17\u03b2-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase<\/strong> &#8211; <\/em>an enzyme that\u00a0is involved in synthesis of steroid hormones such as testosterone.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>#Study 2:<\/strong><\/span><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Armanini et al [4]<\/p>\n<p>In this study, published in the\u00a0<em>New England Journal of Medicine,\u00a0<\/em>human studies were conducted on 7 young men. They were each given 7g daily of a commercial preparation sweet root\u00a0in the form of tablets. Each tablet contained a relatively small amount of\u00a0glycyrrhizic acid &#8211; 0.5g.<\/p>\n<p>The results found that by day 4 of the study, <strong>T levels fell dramatically, from 740ng\/dL to 414ng\/dL<\/strong>. If you consider that anything under 300ng\/dL is considered clinically &#8216;hypgonodal&#8217; or &#8216;low T&#8217; then this is quite a significant drop.<\/p>\n<p>Again the results suggested that the steroid hormone stimulating\u00a017\u03b2-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase was inhibited.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#Study 3:<\/strong> Armanini et al [5]<\/p>\n<p>In this study, again by Armanini and colleagues, a group of 25 male volunteers were given 7g of sweet root containing 500mg glycyrrhetic acid. Even after a week, <strong>testosterone levels had plummeted by 26%.\u00a0<\/strong>The effects were short-lived however, with T levels returning to normal after a weeks recovery.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not just men either that will suffer the T felling effects of the sweet root. A study in the journal\u00a0<em>Steroids <\/em>[6]<em>\u00a0<\/em>found that when healthy women are given 3.5g of commercial sweet root\u00a0daily (7.6%\u00a0glycyrrhetic acid), T levels fell by 31% after one menstrual cycle, and a further 63% in the second cycle.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1404 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Licorice-Side-Effects.jpg\" alt=\"Licorice-Side-Effects\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Licorice-Side-Effects.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Licorice-Side-Effects-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Licorice-Side-Effects-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Licorice-Side-Effects-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div class=\"group infobox infobox-blue mtop20 mbottom20\">\n<p><strong>Key Point:\u00a0<\/strong>Licorice significantly decreases testosterone in both men and women.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Does sweet root effect cortisol levels?<\/h2>\n<p>Cortisol is the body&#8217;s stress hormone &#8211; it increases in times of physical or emotion stress and has a negative impact on testosterone.\u00a0Studies have shown that not only does the sweet root plant extract decease T levels, but can increase levels of stress hormone too &#8211;\u00a0a syndrome known as &#8216;<strong>mineralocorticoid excess&#8217;.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Journal of Human Hypertension<\/em> [7]\u00a0investigated the use of 100g of the product\u00a0daily over a 4-week period (150mg\u00a0glycyrrhetinic acid) on health status, and found that total and free cortisol increased significantly over the course of the study. Not only that but blood pressure increased at the same rate.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, similar results were found in a group of 22 men and women given\u00a0glycyrrhetinic acid in a\u00a0sweet root candy. Results reported that cortisol levels increased, as did <strong>DHEA<\/strong> &#8211; a precursor hormone to testosterone.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>The increase in cortisol can have dramatic effect on testosterone levels,\u00a0particularly\u00a0when ingested over a long period\u00a0of time. This suggests that the sweet root\u00a0plant is one to be avoided if increasing T levels is what you are after.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Glycyrrhizin &#8211; are there any side effects?<\/h2>\n<p>There are a number of side effects associated with regular\u00a0glycyrrhizin consumption, particularly when consumed in either large amounts, or over a prolonged period of time. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Increased blood pressure<\/li>\n<li>Water retention increasing risk of heart failure<\/li>\n<li>Potassium depletion and sodium increase in the blood<\/li>\n<li>edema, fatigue and headaches<\/li>\n<li>Muscle pain or numbness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Additionally, sweet root\u00a0has been found to decrease libido in men and can even cause erectile dysfunction<\/strong>.
