You start to see results and you enjoy going so you continue to up the intensity. We know that when we weight train our testosterone levels get a boost &#8211; <strong>but\u00a0is more\u00a0exercise\u00a0necessarily\u00a0better?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you train hard too regularly it can have a serious affect on your performance, a term referred to as &#8216;overtraining&#8217;. It can affect the body in a number of different ways.\u00a0In this article we&#8217;ll take a look at the effects of this condition\u00a0on your T levels.<\/p>\n<p>You will learn:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is overtraining?<\/li>\n<li>Does it affect testosterone levels?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>What is overtraining?<\/h2>\n<p>Whenever we exercise we gradually create an environment of <strong>&#8216;stress overload&#8217;<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; we break down muscle tissue and stress the heart and lungs in order to force a response. If we then provide the body with rest, it recovers and grows back bigger and stronger. This is a process called <strong>&#8216;adaptation&#8217;.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t give your body enough\u00a0rest you create an imbalance between overload and adaptation and consequently you don&#8217;t allow the body to regenerate. When this occurs you begin to feel tired, and if you still continue to exercise without rest you become exhausted.<\/p>\n<p>Otherwise referred to as &#8216;staleness&#8217;, &#8216;athlete chronic fatigue&#8217;\u00a0and &#8216;unexplained\u00a0under-performance\u00a0syndrome&#8217;,<em><strong> overtraining (OT)\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>can be defined as&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>the accumulation of training and\/or non-training stress resulting in long-term decrement in performance capacity with or without related physiological and psychological signs and symptoms in which restoration of performance capacity may take several weeks or months [1]<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The symptoms of OT can be diverse and specific both to the individual and also the type of training they undertake. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reduced performance &#8211; loss of strength and fitness<\/li>\n<li>Feelings of physical fatigue, tiredness and exhaustion<\/li>\n<li>Loss of muscle and body weight<\/li>\n<li>Reduced immune system &#8211; more likely to suffer from common cold<\/li>\n<li>Alterations to hormones<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>One such hormone that may be altered by overtraining is that of testosterone. But how does\u00a0excessive\u00a0exercise\u00a0affect it? Read on to find out&#8230;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1453 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Overtraining-and-Testosterone-Link.jpg\" alt=\"Overtraining-and-Testosterone-Link\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Overtraining-and-Testosterone-Link.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Overtraining-and-Testosterone-Link-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Overtraining-and-Testosterone-Link-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Overtraining-and-Testosterone-Link-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div class=\"group infobox infobox-blue mtop20 mbottom20\">\n<p><strong>Key Point:<\/strong> Overtraining is the imbalance between exercise and rest, and can cause symptoms such reduced performance, fatigue, loss of muscle and exhaustion.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Does overtraining affect testosterone?<\/h2>\n<p>The symptoms\u00a0of OT can be largely placed into four main categories &#8211;\u00a0<em><strong>psychological, physiological, biochemical and immunological\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>[2].\u00a0One element of the &#8216;biochemical&#8217; category of symptoms &#8211; testosterone, has often been used\u00a0to diagnose OT in elite athletes.<\/p>\n<p>Depending on the intensity or duration of exercise, hormones can either be anabolic &#8211; help you to build muscle, or catabolic &#8211; break down muscle. For that reason, excessive exercise may negatively impact T levels. Here&#8217;s what the studies say:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>#Study 1<\/strong><\/span>: A\u00a0study in the\u00a0<em>British Medical Journal <\/em>[3]<em>\u00a0<\/em>analysed testosterone levels in rugby players to see if they could determine the relationship between hormones, state of fitness and exhaustion.<\/p>\n<p>The authors of the study reported that T levels correlated well with feelings of tiredness, and about 25% of players classed as excessively fatigued had <strong>T levels up to 30% lower than normal. <\/strong>One player had <strong>almost a 50% drop in T.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>The study concluded that testosterone concentrations were\u00a0influenced by tiredness, and is therefore a valid marker of\u00a0OT<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>#Study 2:<\/strong><\/span> Similarly, a study of 5 swimmers in the <em>International Journal of Sports Medicine <\/em>[4]\u00a0found that\u00a0T levels were lower after 2 weeks of hard training, and related to\u00a0decreases in performance following intensive training.<\/p>\n<p>This effect has also been found in rowers too. Vervoorn et al [5] found that during a\u00a01988 Olympic training camp, the <strong>testosterone levels of the rowers were far lower\u00a0during periods of heavy training than during recovery.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Additionally, cortisol levels &#8211; a stress hormone that has been found to decrease muscle mass and have negative effects on T was elevated.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>#Study 3:<\/strong><\/span> An interesting study by\u00a0Schelling\u00a0et al [6] investigated the effects of\u00a0playing positions, playing time, and phase of the season on both testosterone and cortisol levels in basketball players.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers were able to work out that <strong>T levels were lower in those that played the most and also during months with most games<\/strong>. They also reported that cortisol levels were higher in those that played specifically between 13 and 25 minutes per game, and that the players&#8217; &#8216;testosterone-cortisol ratio&#8217; &#8211; basically a measure\u00a0to show\u00a0catabolic or stressed hormonal status, was higher during periods of excessive tiredness.<\/p>\n<p>The authors concluded that\u00a0monitoring T and\u00a0cortisol is recommended to prevent excessive stress.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>#Study 4:<\/strong><\/span> Lastly, H\u00e4kkinen and colleagues [7] wanted to find out how intensive weight lifting affected hormones, in particular the T:cortisol ratio.
