They are confident and competitive. And you can tell by their physique that they look after themselves &#8211; lots of muscle and shredded body fat.<\/p>\n<p>But other than looking them in the eyes or sneaking at peak at their physique how else can you tell?<\/p>\n<p>In this article we&#8217;ll look at the current research on what your fingers say about your masculinity. Does your\u00a0<em><strong>digit ratio<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0really say how high your testosterone levels are?<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s find out&#8230;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Evolution of the Hand<\/h2>\n<p>Human hands are different to those of apes as we have longer thumbs relative to finger length. Our thumbs are also\u00a0<em>opposable<\/em>, meaning we can grip, grab and hold much better than our hairier counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>It is thought to be a characteristic that developed over millions of years of\u00a0<em>tool behaviour.\u00a0<\/em>The more we clubbed, bludgeoned and hurled things the more the need for functional hands was required.<\/p>\n<p>The best at these activities would rise in the male dominance hierarchy and therefore be presented with more breeding opportunities [1].<\/p>\n<p>And <strong>nothing says masculinity more than having to club a rival caveman into submission<\/strong> in order to win the affections of the best loin-clothed female.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3162\" src=\"https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Hand-digit-ratio.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Hand-digit-ratio.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Hand-digit-ratio-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Hand-digit-ratio-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Hand-digit-ratio-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Fingers and Digits<\/h2>\n<p>Let&#8217;s start by taking a look at your hands. Turn your palm away from you and close your fingers in together.<\/p>\n<p>As you look down at the top of your hand you&#8217;ll see you thumb. This is what&#8217;s referred to as the pollex or\u00a0<em>first digit. <\/em>This unique appendage allows you to grip like no other primate.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>Power grip:<\/strong><\/em> allows you to apply high force. Like when you grip a barbell or dumbbell<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Precision grip<\/strong><\/em>: allows you to employ a more precise grip by pinching your thumb and index finger, such as when you hold a pen<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>From there you&#8217;ll have an additional four digits.<\/p>\n<p>The first two fingers are referred to as the first\/index finger (<em>second digit<\/em>) and middle finger (<em>third digit). <\/em>These two are particularly important in gripping and throwing.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ve then got your ring finger (<em>fourth digit)<\/em> and little finger or pinky (<em>fifth digit).\u00a0<\/em>These function to assist with grip and move the back of the hand inwards to close the hand when you flex them.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3163\" src=\"https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Fist-punch-man.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Fist-punch-man.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Fist-punch-man-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Fist-punch-man-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Fist-punch-man-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Testosterone and Finger Length<\/h2>\n<p>Men don&#8217;t all have the same length fingers. You might have noticed this before, or you might not have.<\/p>\n<p>But nevertheless, your fingers can tell you a great deal about your exposure to testosterone in the womb. They can also tell you a bit about your athleticism and personality characteristics too.<\/p>\n<h3>Digit ratio and\u00a0men<\/h3>\n<p>The\u00a0<em><strong>digit ratio\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>is typically the ratio between the length of each of your fingers, as measured from the tip of your finger to the base where it meets your hand.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s two fingers that are of importance here &#8211; <strong>your second and fourth digits, <\/strong>or 2D and 4D.<\/p>\n<p>Research shows that men tend to have shorter second digits in comparison to fourth. Whereas for women it&#8217;s not as prevalent. They tend to have second and fourth digits of either equal length, or have longer second fingers.<\/p>\n<p>These gender differences are referred to as <em><strong>sexually dimorphic.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>In the late 1990&#8217;s, it was suggested that these differences could be down to <strong>how much testosterone you were exposed to in the womb<\/strong>\u00a0[2].<\/p>\n<p>This was backed up by other studies too.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2911\" src=\"https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Testosterone-Athlete-Booster.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Testosterone-Athlete-Booster.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Testosterone-Athlete-Booster-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Testosterone-Athlete-Booster-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Testosterone-Athlete-Booster-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>2D:4D Ratio &#8211; How High Is Your Testosterone?<\/h2>\n<p>The ratio between your second and fourth digits tell you quite a lot. And it&#8217;s not some backstreet palm reading illusion either.<\/p>\n<p>You work your\u00a02D:4D ratio out by simply measuring the length of your index finger and dividing it by the length of your ring finger.<\/p>\n<h3>Is your ring finger longer than you index finger?<\/h3>\n<p>According to research from <em>Biological Psychology\u00a0<\/em>[3], the average\u00a02D:4D for men is 0.947 and for women it is 0.965. That means that most men have longer ring fingers than index.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The second to fourth digit ratio is a sexually dimorphic trait with lower finger ratios considered more masculine [4].<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Those with a low 2D:4D (indicating a long ring finger relative to the index finger)\u00a0have been found to have:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Higher sperm numbers<\/li>\n<li>Higher testosterone concentrations<\/li>\n<li>Lower estrogen and prolactin levels<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And men with lower androgen levels? They tend to have more equal length digits in line with females.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3169\" src=\"https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Hands-Businessman.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Hands-Businessman.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Hands-Businessman-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Hands-Businessman-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Hands-Businessman-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>What Does Your 2D:4D Ratio Say About You?<\/h2>\n<p>Your\u00a02D:4D tells you how much testosterone you were exposed to as a developing fetus in the womb.<\/p>\n<p>It\u00a0gives an indication of how <em>masculinized<\/em>\u00a0your body\u00a0is.<\/p>\n<h3>Low\u00a02D:4D<\/h3>\n<p>You&#8217;ll find that low 2D:4D men are confident and assertive.<\/p>\n<p>Those with lower digit ratios show <strong>more aggressive behavior and more dominating personalities<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; both hallmarks of high testosterone levels.<\/p>\n<p>One study [5], showed that in a group of 171 healthy men, low\u00a0<em>2D:4D <\/em>was associated with competitiveness and aggression, whereas in women there was no association found.<\/p>\n<p>A 2016 study found that low digit ratio men are <strong>faster,\u00a0more athletic and have better spatial awareness\u00a0<\/strong>[4]. They are also risk takers.<\/p>\n<p>To use the evolutionary terminology again, this makes them perfect <em>hunter-gatherers.\u00a0<\/em>The most manly of jobs.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not all good though. Low digit ratios may also linked to higher incidences of alcoholism and video game addictions too [6].<\/p>\n<h3>High\u00a02D:4D<\/h3>\n<p>High ratio men on the other hand can be more superstitious and have a nice, agreeable charm to their personality. They are less threatening to females which is probably why they&#8217;re more likely to have female friends.<\/p>\n<p>They are also more likely to suffer from eating disorders, and may even have more feminine handwriting.<\/p>\n<h3>Femininity and sexuality<\/h3>\n<p>Research also shows that gay men <em>might\u00a0<\/em>have a higher incidence of high 2D:4D, whereas gay women could\u00a0have lower\u00a02D:4D [7].<\/p>\n<p>Currently there&#8217;s a bit of discrepancy in the research and no agreement has been made. Why?
