Or is the research misleading?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Read on to find out&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is\u00a0fadogia agrestis?<\/li>\n<li>What are the benefits?<\/li>\n<li>Does\u00a0fadogia agrestis optimise testosterone levels?<\/li>\n<li>Are there any side effects?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>What is Fadogia Agrestis?<\/h2>\n<p>Otherwise known as <strong>black aphrodisiac <\/strong>and<strong> Baakin gagai<\/strong>, fadogia agrestis is a Nigerian bush plant from the\u00a0<em>Rubiaceae\u00a0<\/em>family.<\/p>\n<p>It is characterized by its yellowish leaves and stem, tomentose appearance and rather short 1-3 foot high stature [1].<\/p>\n<p>Like with many plants and herbs, fadogia contains a number of bioactive compounds, with the stem in particular being high in various phytochemicals including alkaloids, saponins and glycosides.\u00a0It is particularly common in developing countries as a traditional, medicinal herb.<\/p>\n<p>The main active component seem to be <strong>alkylamide glycosides<\/strong> &#8211; a class of molecules not often seen in testosterone boosters.<\/p>\n<h2>What&#8217;s it Used For?<\/h2>\n<p>Primarily as a fertility aid.<\/p>\n<p>Fadogia isn&#8217;t the most commercially available supplement ingredient but it has been anecdotally reported to improve symptoms of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Erectile dysfunction<\/li>\n<li>Low libido<\/li>\n<li>Impotence<\/li>\n<li>Low sex drive<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All in all, it&#8217;s well known as a &#8216;sexual invigorator&#8217; in traditional African medicine.<\/p>\n<p>And because testosterone is so closely linked to reproductive health and sexual performance, this has led to bodybuilding and sports companies trying to market the aqueous plant extract as a testosterone booster.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But that doesn&#8217;t necessarily\u00a0mean that science backs it up as an effective male supplement.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So is there a link between fadogia agrestis and testosterone? And even that research is questionable.<\/p>\n<h3>One study found an increase in reproductive function&#8230;<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Study #1:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0[2]<\/p>\n<p>This study, published in the <em>Asian Journal of Andrology<\/em>\u00a0in 2005,<em>\u00a0<\/em>evaluated the use of the black aphrodisiac plant on male albino rats.<\/p>\n<p>The rats were dosed with varying amounts of an extract of fadogia in order to assess its potential as a sexual stimulant.<\/p>\n<p>The authors of the study reported that testosterone did increase in a dose dependant way, and they theorized that this might be down to the bioactive saponin content of the plant.<\/p>\n<p>Lead author Yakubu suggested that the extract <strong>might be used to modify impaired sexual function<\/strong>&#8230;<strong> but specifically <em>in animals<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3539\" src=\"https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Extract-of-Fadogia-African-herb.jpg\" alt=\"Fadogia extract boosts libido and erectile dysfunction\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Extract-of-Fadogia-African-herb.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Extract-of-Fadogia-African-herb-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Extract-of-Fadogia-African-herb-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.testofuel.com\/tf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Extract-of-Fadogia-African-herb-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div class=\"group infobox infobox-blue mtop20 mbottom20\">\n<p>The above study is the reason why some supplement manufacturers jumped on the band wagon with the herb and added it to their T boosters. But can a lone study in animals really justify spending your hard earned cash?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>&#8230; but others haven&#8217;t found negative effects<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Study #2:<\/strong><\/span> [1]<\/p>\n<p>The same research team conducted a similar study in 2008. They presumably wanted to do a validity test based around the surprising results from their initial study.<\/p>\n<p>Using the same doses as before, Yakubu and his team gave varying doses of a fadogia extract to another set of male rats &#8211; this time over a 28-day period.<\/p>\n<p>The results were probably not what the team were expecting &#8211; testosterone levels increased slightly at the beginning of the study, but then <strong>dropped dramatically at day 5 &#8211; to below the baseline levels recorded at the start of the study.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Validity issues<\/h3>\n<p>It goes to show that if you base your supplement ingredients around just one animal study, then it&#8217;s probably not a good plan. Yakubu and team found what they thought to be an effective testosterone boosting nutrient from their first research study, but when it was followed up by a re-test study, the results just weren&#8217;t replicated.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Fadogia Could Also Be Unsafe<\/h2>\n<p>Not only does fadogia have a poor research profile, <strong>it could also be unsafe too.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The 2008 Yakubu study not only reported a dip in testosterone levels, but potential for the extract to be <strong>toxic to testicular tissue<\/strong> too.
